usweb/sucks. the uber roll-up, now known as "marchFirst", is teetering on the brink of extinction. it appears that they're almost outta dough. if they don't get $50m by the end of the year, they're toast, which is really bad for them, since the holiday season is traditionally a tough time to get money raised. the carnage continues...

echoing the chorus that has for years blasted all unix flavors, there is a rising tide saying that poor usability is hurting linux. amen.
if a product is not easy to figure out and use, it's going to be frustrating for most people. and people don't like to be frustrated. it's pretty simple, really (the equation, not the process of making something easy to use).
make software useful, and easy to try and learn, and it will likely be successful. fail in either one of those, and product robustness and marketing and sales efforts become irrelevant.

great bridge is a company that's commercializing the postgresql open source database application. they have a role in their company called vp of hacker relations. how cool is that?
this is also a great look at the process that a company should go through to integrate itself into an open source software community. highly recommended reading.

great interview/article with one of the founders of the apache foundation, one of the leading open source software organizations. sounds like they're working on setting themselves up to be a force for the future.

another article on companies jumping on the open source bandwagon. this article's not that great, since they muck up the definition of open source; they're confused with copylefted free software.
(2:55:16 PM)
interesting thought piece on "quasi-open source" products and companies that are coming to market.
