took dad to see the scorps at the greek last night. they played with a full symphony orchestra, which was pretty cool. but by the end of the concert, i realized that it's really tough to make an orchestra sound like distinctive rock and roll; most of the scorps' songs would have been indistinguishable from the songs in metallica's symphony-backed s&m.

night ranger opened, but we missed them due to traffic and "a misunderstanding of where the venue was". ahem. but we got there in plenty of time to see the whole scorpions set. how hilarious is it that they opened and closed with "hurricane"? they played all of their hits (some of which i had forgotten entirely until they started belting them out), except for "blackout". there were of course some sweet clothes and mullets in effect, along with the ever-present wafting of pot smoke. a great time was had by all.

i'm part of the cubicle army again. i just finished moving my mobile office into a big mint colored cubicle here at the office.

when we first moved into this space, i rated an office, but i had a desk on wheels. i moved spots 3 times with my mobile office, including a 3 week jaunt in the kitchen, which was just great. and now, we've hired an Executive Vice President who outranks me by quite a bit, so he is taking the office that i was occupying. so now i'm a cubist, once more.

i love this debunking of the "first mover advantage", but it unfortunately popularizes my favorite personal observation: that amazon.com wasn't actually the first mover in its space.

anyway, it's good to see that some efforts are finally being made to cast a bit of light on a commonly abused phrase and concept. first isn't necessarily best. best isn't even necessarily best (look at betacam; it was a clearly superior technology to vhs). and fastest isn't necessarily best. steady, well-paced, solid and lucky execution is usually the best. there is no magic formula for success, and no buzz-phrases can guarantee long-term success.

evaporating vaporware: pop.com is going to go away before it begins. thus ends another over-hyped non-venture.
