another study shows that americans don't care about wireless web access. yet. or so claims patrick callinan. he says "consumers don't think they want the wireless web yet, but they will." gee, he must have one of those wireless crystal balls...

as i (and any other reasonable person) expected, the folks who've been laid off in the recent dotcom failures are having no trouble finding new gigs. in fact, many are choosing to just take some time off to chill out.

$500 million sure seems like a lot of money to me. but to microsoft, it's pocket change, if it means dominating the set-top. oh, and btw, my college roommate is leading the bizdev/acquisitions efforts for microsoft for the xbox. and he's not even evil. well, not that evil, at least.

i'm excited to see dick cheney on the republican ticket. i think he's a great guy, and generally agree with his stances. i also worked in his and lynne's office at aei while i was in college.

i rode to a taping of crossfire with him, and we talked about fly-fishing. c'mon, who can dislike a guy who loves fly fishing?!?

i still think g.w. is a dope, though.

a strange thing happened in seattle yesterday. water started falling from the sky while we were golfing, and it didn't stop all day. the natives call this phenomena "rain". i'm glad this doesn't happen in la. the skies look happier today.

i'm posting this via my new wireless lan modem at the office. it's way cool. i'll test it out later to see if i can connect from the park...

heading to seattle for a fun-filled weekend with some friends up there. golf on saturday, mariners game on sunday. i'm close to committing myself to the standard american male's "life goal" of seeing a game in every baseball park. i'm not quite there yet, but i'm awfully close.

it has been a very meeting-filled week at work. we're at that stage in a start-up's life where we're small enough that we don't have enough people to do all the work, but there are enough of us doing related things that we need to share a lot of information and decision making processes. we're also in a unique (in my experience) situation where we've got a lot of talented, decision-capable people, but we haven't made that many decisions.

most start-ups spend a lot longer in the idea stage, where they have 1-4 founders, working out a lot of details, and trying to raise money, but not doing much work. then they hire people. 6 months after that, they're where we're at at 70 days after forming the company. it seens to be simultaneously good and bad to be "ahead" at this stage in the game...

i've been getting back in touch with some of my friends from high school, via highschoolalumni.com. it's been very cool to find out how people have turned out. i'm sort of (but not really) amazed by the number of my classmates who are married, and have kids. even more shocking (again, probably not really though) is the number of people who are on their second marriages already. it's a sharp contrast to my friends from college, for sure...

i'm learning all about product management (not to be confused with project management) this weekend. tearing through some good books on the subject between various cleaning related chores. i'll post reviews of my reads in the coming days.

*phew*. cleaning a bathroom sure is hard, unfun work. i could never be a janitor.

when i first heard about fucked company a few weeks ago, i thought it was a good, funny idea. i liked the concept, and the news was in-line with stuff that i already follow.

i spent some time today checking out their recently added message boards. man, are there a lot of bitter, short-sighted people with internet access! judging by the posts there, every company ever is totally screwed, and will go out of business in 3 months.

i wonder if the people who post there actually put any thought into their posts, or if it's all purely knee-jerk "me too"isms and "no, you're stupid!" reactions. what a waste.

in related news, what happened to fast company? i used to love that mag, but ever since they went monthly, the quality has gone downhill rapidly. (i guess that answers my question, huh?)
(5:47:54 PM)

the anti-dotcom sentiment has reached crazy proportions in some sf locales. hmmm, yet another reason to stay in la, where people only smash your window if they actually want to steal your stuff!

oh, and since i was locked out of my apartment last night, i didn't get to say happy birthday, mom! but since i got back in today, i do get to take her and dad out for dinner in a bit. looking forward to it!
(4:27:41 PM)

gaaaaaah. to top off my week, i managed to lock myself out of my apartment last night. was heading out to meet up for dinner with some friends, and realized juuuuust as the door shut behind me that i'd left my keys upstairs. if i had a roommate, or if someone else in town had a copy of my keys, it wouldn't have been a big deal. but they didn't. so i scrambled around trying to find my landlord, who (luckily) lives in the building. he's allllllways around.

not last night. so i crashed on the floor at my friends' place. thankfully my landlord wasn't out of town for the weekend, and he rang me up this morning.

home, sweet home.

as the geeks are inheriting the earth, interviewing faux pas are on the rise. funny stuff. i've never had an interview like this, but i did once have a new programmer come into my office and say "i've gotta go", to which i replied "ok, no problem. just let your project manager know". i found out the next day that when he said "i've gotta go" he meant "i quit".

my car is happy again. and now it's clean, too. my checkbook and cd collection are still sad, though.

strange realization tonight: the smashing of my car window happened today, almost 2 years to the day after my last run-in with banditos. someone stole my mountain bike late at night on july 3, 1998. bizarre coincidence, or cosmic plot to spoil my fabulous 4th of july? you be the judge.
(11:47:27 PM)

sad car: a photo-essay, in three parts. 1, 2, 3.
(11:41:14 PM)

ARRRRRRRGGGGG!!! someone broke into my truck today. smashed in the front passenger window and grabbed my cd case. i caught him in the act, too, but didn't pursue. verrrrrrry frustrating way to "spend" $500+...
(8:31:47 PM)

town hall, my first real job out of college, celebrated its fifth anniversary on the web last week (they started a bbs in 1992, so they were online before that). i joined them just after their launch, and still remember the pain of the early days. vintage 1.0 web design, replete with massive server-side image maps. looks like there's still one member of the staff there who was there when i was, which just blows my mind. john garthwaite is hard-core!
